Clients
Gary McClain is a licensed counselor who focuses on working with clients who are suffering from chronic and catastrophic illnesses. He is also a consultant to the healthcare industry, where he works on programs for patient decision-making, patient/caregiver education, and professional education. He has been a counselor for over twenty years and helps clients to learn about their treatment options and to communicate effectively with the medical establishment. McClain also works with caregivers on ways to help their loved ones as well as deal with their own helplessness. He also works as a counselor with Body Positive, a self-help organization for individuals facing HIV and AIDS. He counsels newly-diagnosed patients, is a contributing writer for Body Positive Magazine, and is a member of the Community Advisory Board for Body Positive. Additionally, he works with employee assistance companies to provide stress management workshops and counseling for in the workplace.

McClain serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors of Miracle House, a non-profit organization which offers temporary housing and support to patients and caregivers who come to New York City from throughout the world for medical treatment. He developed a Patient and Caregiver Advocacy Program for Miracle House. As a consultant, McClain works with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and non-profit organizations to better understand the needs of patients, caregivers, and physicians, and to help them to communicate more effectively with each other. He has worked in a variety of areas, including conditions such as obesity, sexual dysfunction, smoking cessation, arthritis, overactive bladder, glaucoma, anemia, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer (adult and pediatric), and HIV. Other areas of expertise include healthcare finance topics such as flexible spending accounts, prescription cards for the elderly, and HMO options.

Professional affiliations include the American Counseling Association, the New York Mental Health Counselor’s Association (Chairperson, Professional Development Committee), the Association on Adult Development and Aging, the American Psychosomatic Medicine Society, and the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. McClain completed graduate work in Clinical Psychology and Adult Development, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
